Fairhope Firefighter Collapses From Heat Stroke

By Associated Press

Fairhope AL – A volunteer firefighter from Fairhope remains in intensive care after he collapsed from heat stroke while putting out a fire.

Captain John Saraceno said 32-year-old Chantez Jones collapsed while fighting a fire at a mobile home on Young Street around one p.m. yesterday. According to the National Weather Service, the heat index was about 107 in Mobile at the time.

Saraceno said he thought the temperature with firefighting gear would be about 140. Jones also works for the city of Fairhope Publics Works Department. He had been working outside before the fire.

Saraceno said Jones was dragging a large hose from a fire truck to a hydrant across the street when he collapsed. He was taken to Thomas Hospital in Fairhope and was diagnosed with heat stroke.
