Dothan, AL – Former Alabama Attorney General Richmond McDavid Flowers died Thursday at his home in Dothan. He was 88.
According to a statement released by Byrd Funeral Home in Dothan, Flowers was elected state attorney general in 1962. During his term he won two landmark voting cases in the U.S. Supreme Court -- Baker vs. Carr and Reynolds vs. Sims.
The statement says his administration was also active in voiding Alabama's law prohibiting women from serving on juries. He was also active in prosecuting people who committed hate crimes in the 1960s.
The Dothan Eagle reported that Flowers was convicted in 1969 of violating the Hobbs Act, attempting to obstruct or affect interstate commerce, and sentenced to eight years in prison.
He was paroled in 1974 and received a presidential pardon from Jimmy Carter in 1978.
More recently, he was a legal adviser to Flowers Hospital and taught criminal justice and U.S. history at Wallace Community College.
Memorial services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
