Alabama Students Do Well on SAT

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – Alabama's 2007 high school graduating class excelled on the SAT college-entrance exam. State educators said exam scores from 2,618 public high school seniors in Alabama reveal they scored above the national average for the 16th consecutive year.

Overall, students who took the standardized test in Alabama scored an average of 1,766 out of a possible 2,400. That's compared to the national average of 1,495.

The department said Alabama students in all minority groups also scored above the national average on the SAT.

Joe Morton, Alabama's Superintendent of Education, said in a statement today that the results show the state ''has a winning plan to educate all of its students.''

Nationally, the College Board reports that the class of '07 averaged the lowest math and reading scores since 1999.

Last year was the first year that high school students began taking the revamped test, which included higher-level math questions and eliminated analogies. It also included a writing portion for the first time.
