Tuscaloosa Police Chief Responds to Crime Rumors

By Associated Press

Tuscaloosa, AL – The Tuscaloosa police chief says the recent rape of a University of Alabama student fueled rumors of multiple assaults that weren't true. He also said stopping crime in the vicinity of the campus is the top priority for Tuscaloosa police.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Ken Swindle said one mother had heard there were 19 rapes in the area. He said that figure is ''so far off.'' Since July, police said, there have been two reported rapes in the area around the university.

The rape September 14th of a student at her home prompted 75 officers to go to the neighborhood to knock on doors and alert residents.

Swindle says that officers have been working overtime to patrol the campus area because of reported burglaries and car break-ins.

UA spokesman Chris Bryant said students are being reminded to lock their doors and take other precautions.
