Guntersville – A missing woman case that remained a Marshall County mystery for 22 years has been solved.
Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls announced Wednesday that skeletal remains found in Guntersville more than four years ago have been identified as belonging to Wanda Jean Mays, who disappeared in 1986.
Walls said Mays suffered from a chemical imbalance and fell to her death at night in rocky terrain. He said no foul play was involved.
Mays was 27 when she was last seen on May 12th, 1986. Walls said in a statement that Mays spent the night at the home of her aunt and uncle, who discovered her missing the next morning.
In October 2003, a hunter found the skeletal remains of a young woman in a remote, wooded area off Cha-La-Kee Road in Guntersville. The site where the bones were found is about two miles from the home of Mays' aunt and uncle.
The remains were tested at the FBI's DNA lab in Quantico, Virginia, and the young woman was identified as Mays.
