Half of VX Agent Destroyed at Anniston Facility

Anniston – Workers at the Chemical Agent Disposal Facility say they have destroyed more than half of the VX nerve agent stored at the Anniston facility.

In a statement released today, Westinghouse reports crews have incinerated more than 90,000 VX-filled artillery shells and more than 35,000 VX-filled rockets. Another 40,000 gallons of VX agent also were neutralized.

The latest figures mean more than 57 percent of the VX-filled munitions and 51 percent of the VX agent stored at Anniston have been destroyed. Past phases of the disposal operation involved eliminating all munitions that contained the GB nerve agent.

To date, more than 40 percent of the total chemical weapons stockpiled at the facility has now been destroyed.

Operations at the facility began in August 2003.
