House Begins Debate To Rewrite Ala. Constitution

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House has begun a debate on rewriting Alabama's 107-year-old constitution.

The bill by House Speaker Pro Tem Demetrius Newton would call for voters to decide during the 2010 political party primary elections if they want to call a convention to write a new constitution.

If voters decide they want a new constitution, they will return to the polls to elect delegates from the state's 105 House districts to write the new constitution.

Voters would also have to approve the final version.
