Summary of Special Session Final Day

Montgomery AL – A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Saturday, the fifth and final day of the special session:

HOUSE

_Approved a $6.36 billion education budget. Goes to governor.

_Joined the Senate in approving "rainy day" fund legislation for the General Fund and education budgets. Goes to statewide vote.

_Gave final approval to a bill setting up a system to release some terminally ill inmates from prison. Goes to governor.

_Approved a package of bills that allows motorists to buy specialty versions of Alabama's "God Bless America" tag, with the revenue to help with a veterans cemetery near Montevallo. Goes to governor.

SENATE

_Approved a tax break for small businesses that provide health insurance to their workers. Goes to governor.

_Voted to make sure state income taxes aren't levied on the federal economic stimulus checks. Goes to governor

_Give final approval to a bill closing some loopholes national corporations use to lower their state taxes in Alabama. Goes to governor.

AGENDA

_Next regular session begins Feb. 3, but the governor may call a special session before then.
