Bid To Halt Dill Execution Filed In Ala. High Court

Montgomery, AL – An attorney for 49-year-old Jimmy Lee Dill has asked the Alabama Supreme Court to block his lethal injection scheduled Thursday for the shooting death of Leon Shaw in Jefferson County.

The bid for a stay of execution was filed Monday for Dill, who has been on death row at Holman prison near Atmore for nearly 20 years. Prosecutors contend Dill has exhausted his state and federal appeals.

In Monday's filing, his lawyers argued that Dill had ineffective counsel at trial and didn't understand a plea deal that could have brought a life sentence.

The high court did not immediately rule.

Shaw was shot in the back of the head and robbed of cocaine and money on Feb. 8, 1988. He died about 10 months later.
