Birmingham, AL – Several Alabama communities will share $1 million in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants to clean up former industrial and commercial sites that may contain hazardous chemicals.
In a statement Monday, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson said the Jefferson County Industrial Development Authority will receive $200,000 for the cleanup of the Trinity Ironworks site. Talladega and Mobile will receive $400,000 each to assess sites, known as ``brownfields,'' because of pollutants found at the locations that were not identified by EPA.
The grants were awarded through the federal economic stimulus program.
