N. Alabama City Approves English Language Ordinance

By Associated Press

Albertville, AL – The Albertville City Council has approved an ordinance making English the city's primary language.

It took less than a minute for the council to pass the ordinance Monday night.

The vote was unanimous and there was no debate at the council meeting.

Albertville, located in north Alabama, has a large Hispanic population.

City leaders said this new ordinance should unify their city and get everyone speaking the same language. Among its effects, all documents in city hall will be in English.

Mayor Lindsey Lyons says, "We have got to begin dialogue with the immigrants that are here and this is one of the many ways we're starting to do this. And we feel like again it'll be a positive way to unify everybody."
