Ala. Guard Unit Deploying To Iraq

Demopolis, AL – The Alabama Army National Guard's 2101st Transportation Company out of Demopolis, Aliceville and Butler is going overseas again.

The unit's commander, Capt. Kelvin Perkins, says it will be a return trip to Iraq for 20 to 30 percent of the 170 or so guard members departing this weekend.

The Tuscaloosa News says a departure ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Demopolis High School, with senior Alabama National Guardsmen and other officials expected to attend.

The unit will go to Fort Dix, N.J., for additional training before deploying to Iraq.

Last summer, 47 of the unit's members assisted the victims of a church bus crash on Interstate 20/59 while returning from a training exercise at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Miss.
