Montgomery, AL – Alabama's Board of Education has unanimously passed a resolution supporting the creation of charter schools in the state.
All nine members of the board, including Gov. Bob Riley, were present Thursday and voted for the resolution.
The board's approval could help Riley's efforts to get the Legislature to pass a bill clearing the way to establish charter schools. Alabama is one of 11 states that don't permit the schools.
Riley and state Superintendent of Education Joe Morton say the charter school legislation would help Alabama qualify for $200 million in federal education funding that could be used for other programs, including the Alabama Reading Initiative.
