Ala. Senator, After Gov. Calls, Opposes Bingo Bill

Montgomery, AL – State Sen. Larry Dixon has decided he is against a bill to legalize and tax certain electronic bingo operations in Alabama after getting a call from the measure's biggest foe, Republican Gov. Bob Riley.

Dixon, a Montgomery Republican, said Thursday he had not decided how he would vote on the bingo legislation, but he said Creek Indians with casinos in the state would win no matter how it turns out. Riley gave Dixon a call after seeing a news report on it.

Dixon and Riley issued a joint statement Friday in which Dixon said he is ``adamantly'' opposed to the bill. The legislation is expected to come up next week in the Senate, where the vote is expected to be close.
