TVA Ending Coal Ash Shipments To Alabama Landfill

Knoxville, TN – The Tennessee Valley Authority is about to end rail shipments of coal ash from the December 2008 spill at its Kingston Plant to a landfill in west Alabama.

Steve McCracken is in charge of the cleanup and said the last of 400 trains that have pulled 40,000 rail cars filled with 4 million tons of ash dredged from the Emory River should be sent by Nov. 22.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that McCracken made the comment Tuesday to a group in Oak Ridge.

McCracken said the $1.2 billion cleanup should otherwise be finished by 2014. So far the cleanup has cost TVA just over $605 million.

About 5.4 million cubic yards of coal ash spilled from a breach in an earthen dam at the plant.
