Officers Commended for Action During Shooting Rampage

By Associated Press

Huntsville, AL – The first police officers who responded to a shooting rampage at the University of Alabama Huntsville have been recognized for bravery.

Huntsville police officers Chad Bryant and David Hendricks, university officers Cheryl Wooden and Jeff Wright and Madison County sheriff's deputy Richard Brown received awards Thursday from the Military Order of the World Wars.

The officers were among the first to enter a conference room where authorities say Amy Bishop opened fire on her colleagues during a faculty meeting. They are credited with providing medical help that saved three people.

Three others died in the attack.

Bishop, a former biology professor at the school, is charged with capital murder and attempted murder in that attack. She's also charged in Massachusetts with the 1986 killing of her brother.
