Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Outstanding News Operation
Alabama Public Radio
2010
In 2010, Alabama Public Radio covered stories ranging from the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, to the first anniversary of the mass shooting deaths around the town of Samson, the BCS football championship for the Crimson Tide, and the launch of Mobile native and astronaut Kay Hire aboard the Space Shuttle. The news team also worked with University of Alabama students studying abroad in Havana on a series of commentaries recorded there called "Postcards from Cuba." APR also examined the on-going problem posed by HIV and AIDS in Alabama, where the infection rate is as bad now as in 1985, when the disease was at its height nationally.
