Montgomery, AL – Democrats in the Alabama Legislature plan to try again to have a statewide referendum on whether citizens want a new state constitution.
Members of the Democratic caucuses in the House and Senate announced Thursday they will propose a resolution that would allow citizens to vote yes or no on a constitutional convention that would rewrite Alabama's 1901 document.
Rep. Demetrius Newton of Birmingham tried to pass a similar resolution in the past when Democrats were in the majority and it failed due to Republican opposition. Newton is making no optimistic predictions now that Republicans control the Legislature.
Rep. Merika Coleman of Midfield said the constitution needs to be rewritten because it was designed to hold back women, blacks and poor whites.
