Gov. Bentley Orders Spice To Be Taken Off Shelves

Montgomery, AL – Authorities are seizing ``Spice'' from store shelves across Alabama.

People smoke the herbal product, which also goes by names such as K2, instead of marijuana. Officials say the product is dangerous and people have died from using it.

Gov. Robert Bentley signed an executive order Friday morning to take the product off the street. State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamson moved to make it a controlled substance and illegal. That classification takes effect Oct. 24 and will put the product in the same category as heroin and other drugs.

No arrests are planned while authorities remove the product in coming days. Store owners will get a receipt showing what was taken, and the products will be tested.

The product typically sells for $20 to $40 a package.
