Ala. Lawmakers Try To Define Legal Teacher Gifts

Montgomery, AL – Legislative proposals to define a legal gift to a teacher range from $25 to $100.

Alabama's new ethics law allows gifts of minimal value, which raised questions about what's permissible this holiday season. Four Republican state senators have written a bill to allow a student to give a single gift of up to $100 and total gifts in a year of up to $250. Sen. Gerald Dial says it would bring common sense to the issue. State Rep. Jay Love says he's working on a bill to allow two gifts worth no more than $25.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Robert Bentley says he wants the Legislature to make clear what's permissible, but he will leave the exact numbers up to legislators.
