Anniston Army Depot to lay off 300 contract workers

Declining project workloads are being blamed for three hundred layoffs at the Anniston Army Depot. The U.S. Army facility builds and repairs combat vehicles and other items. The Depot announced that it expects to release close to two hundred term workers, and another one hundred contractor personnel, beginning in about sixty days. Depot Commander Colonel Eric McCoy says the decision is based on workload for the next fiscal year and is causing adjustments. He says management is working toward a smooth transition. No permanent employees at the facility are affected by the decision. The reductions are coming despite a $750 million contract with Taiwan, reported in Defense News. The Anniston Army Depot’s part in the deal is provide twenty ammunition support vehicles for howitzers supplied by another contractor.
