Alabama Republican Mike Hubbard was once a man who moved political mountains. He’s credited with helping to stage the 2010 GOP takeover of the state legislature which gave the Republicans a supermajority. It also gave Hubbard the gavel as House Speaker. Now, his political career is in tatters as he faces up to 240 years in prison after being convicted of 12 felony ethics charges. Alabama Public Radio’s MacKenzie Bates was the only radio reporter there as the 54-year-old speaker of the Alabama House was removed from office Friday following a marathon day of final arguments and jury deliberations. Hubbard was convicted of soliciting work and investments and using his office to benefit his business clients. Hubbard's conviction and his automatic removal from office add to ongoing political turmoil involving GOP leaders in all three branches of Alabama government. Governor Robert Bentley faces a sex-tinged scandal involving a former aide. Chief Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore is suspended from office and faces possible ouster over accusations that he violated judicial ethics during the fight about same-sex marriage.
