A monument depicting Rosa Parks, the civil rights pioneer that refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in 1955, was unveiled in downtown Montgomery on Wednesday.
The artwork was revealed near the spot that Parks was arrested for violating segregation law on the 66th anniversary of the arrest. The artist Ian Mangum made the sculpture out of black powder-coated steel so that it would be “resilient through the generations”.
Dec. 1 has been considered “Rosa Parks Day” in Alabama since 2018, and more activities reflecting on Parks’ life and activism are set to take place this week. Parks died in 2005.
