Sales tax suspended on school supplies over weekend

Tax free weekend will take place from July 16 to 18 in Alabama. This means residents will be able to buy items such as school supplies, clothing, and electronics with no added sales tax.

Nancy Dennis is the Director of the Alabama Retail Association. She said a variety of items will be tax free as long as they qualify within a certain price range.

“The items that will be tax free include clothing that is $100 or less, school supplies that are $50s or less, books that are $30 or less,” Dennis said, “and tablets, laptops, computers, printers with a selling price of $750 or less.”

Dennis said those who do not have children going back to school can still take advantage of the weekend. Diapers and rain jackets, for example, are also included in the clothing exemption.

She said she believes the holiday is beneficial for customers and businesses.

“It’s really a win-win situation for both businesses and consumers,” Dennis said. “It is a good way to attract customers to local stores and the customers can save as much as ten percent because it’s a statewide holiday.”

More than 325 cities and countries will be participating this year.

Alabama is the first state in the South to be offering this tax exemption weekend for back to school. Other states hosting their own later this summer from late July to early August include Tennessee, Mississippi, and Florida.
