MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus says it has delivered its first Alabama-made A220 passenger aircraft to the Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines.

The A220-300 plane was manufactured in the company’s factory near downtown Mobile. It was the first such aircraft assembled in the United States, but there’s another North American assembly line in Canada.

A regional airport in Alabama’s capital will soon begin offering direct flights to the nation’s capital.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports American Airlines service from Montgomery Regional Airport to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. is set to begin June 7, 2018. One flight will arrive in the morning in Montgomery, and another will depart for Washington in the afternoon.

A Delta Airlines flight from New Orleans to Atlanta has been diverted to Birmingham because of a report of smoke in the cockpit.

Delta Flight 2234 was just east of Montgomery when pilots aborted the flight plan and made an emergency landing at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. The plane landed safely at about 3 p.m.  Television station ABC33/40 reported emergency crews inspected the plane and didn't find any smoke or other signs of fire on the aircraft.

No one was injured in the incident.
