Dangerous Dogs Could Mean Criminal Charges

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – State Representative Cam Ward says he will either introduce or co-sponsor an Alabama Dangerous Dogs Act to target dogs with dangerous behavior. The Alabaster Republican says the law would apply criminal penalties against the owners of dogs that attack people. The action comes after a woman and her six-year-old grandson were attacked by an Airdale, who was not on a leash, at Oak Mountain State Park. Martha Stooksberry says, after the attack, she learned that the only law broken was Pelham's leash law. That carries a maximum $200 fine. Ward says his proposal would not target specific breeds but would hold owners more accountable for their dogs' actions.
