Sheffield, AL – Former U-S Senator Howell Heflin has died. He was 83 years old. A spokesperson for Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield says Heflin died between 4:00 and 4:30 PM Tuesday. Heflin was elected as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in 1970. He was later elected as a Democrat to the U-S Senate and served from 1979 to 1997.
