By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Authorities in Homewood and Birmingham are searching for the driver of a pickup truck who hit and killed an off-duty Birmingham police officer Tuesday night. Police say the hit-and-run death happened around 10 p.m. as officers were chasing the truck through parts of Birmingham and Homewood. Homewood Deputy Police Chief Bob Copus says the officer was riding a bicycle on Raleigh Avenue when he was killed. The officer's name has been withheld. Copus says a lookout has been issued for a Chevrolet truck with an extended cab. The champagne-colored vehicle has a missing headlight and other damage and has a Georgia license tag.
