Food Prices Climb In Ala.

Montgomery, AL – Food prices are up this month in Alabama grocery stores.

The Farmers Federation's monthly survey showed the cost of 20 market basket items rose 1.3 percent, and averaged $53.56 cents. That's up 70 cents from August.

The Federation said strong international demand and higher production costs were to blame.

Pork and eggs prices were up while produce, beef and milk cost less.

Shoppers in south Alabama paid the most for a market basket at $55.95. It was lowest in northeast Alabama at $51.66.

The statewide survey was conducted the first week of September.
