Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Legislature is facing a showdown over teacher ethics in an election year.
Two weeks ago, a legislative committee called the Legislative Council rejected a plan by the State Board of Education to put a code of ethics in the state administrative code. The council called it vague and recommended the school board cut out many of the provisions in the proposed code.
The school board reached a consensus Thursday to stand by its proposal and not make any changes recommended by the council. That means the full Legislature will have to decide early next year whether to back up the Legislative Council's decision or support the ethics code proposed by the school board.
All 140 seats in the Legislature are up for election next year.
