Chairman Says Ala. PACT Bill Up For Vote Tuesday

Montgomery, AL – A state Senate committee will vote next week on a bill to bail out Alabama's financially troubled prepaid college tuition program.

The Senate Fiscal Responsibility and Accountability Committee held a public hearing Wednesday on a bill by the committee's chairman, Democratic Sen. Ted Little of Auburn. His bill would provide $236 million to the Prepaid Affordable College Tuition plan from state education revenue over an eight-year period.

Members of the SAVE Alabama PACT group praised the bill. But the executive secretary of the Alabama Education Association, Paul Hubbert, said it won't work unless universities are limited to tuition increases of 2.5 percent annually for the 45,000 program participants. That is opposed by universities.

Little said he's optimistic the committee will approve some version of his bill Tuesday.
