Greensboro Mayor, Police Chief Resign

By Associated Press

Tuscaloosa, AL – The mayor and police chief of Greensboro have resigned a month after the city council put the chief on administrative leave for undisclosed reasons.

The Tuscaloosa News reports resignation letters from Mayor Johnnie B. Washington and Police Chief Claude Earl Hamilton were submitted to the council during its regular meeting on Tuesday. The council had put the chief and his assistant chief on leave on Feb. 23 and reinstated him Tuesday.

The mayor's letter cited "personal circumstances" for his resignation effective April 6. The chief's resignation is effective immediately.

Multiple phone calls by the News to Washington and Hamilton on Wednesday were not returned.
