Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House of Representatives has unanimously elected Rep. Mike Hubbard of Auburn to be the next speaker of the House.

The House voted 100-0 to make Hubbard the first Republican speaker in more than 130 years. The vote came as legislators began a special session to consider ethics legislation. Hubbard, chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, has been in the House for 12 years.

Hubbard said he would work to make sure the voices of all legislators are heard and not just Republicans.

The House also elected veteran Republican legislator Rep. Victor Gaston of Mobile to be the speaker pro tem of the House.
