Fairhope, AL – Fairhope has joined the list of Alabama cities that have banned texting while driving.
The Fairhope City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Monday night. A first offense is punishable by a $100 fine.
Police Chief Bill Press said the ordinance will be hard to enforce, but his department will look for opportunities to apply it.
Mayor Tim Kant said the ordinance is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of texting while behind the wheel.
Several Alabama cities have already banned texting while driving, including Athens, Birmingham, Decatur, Huntsville, Madison, Montgomery and Daphne.
