Montgomery, AL – Home-schooling parents are asking lawmakers to let their children join public school athletic teams.
The Senate Education Committee held a public hearing Wednesday on a bill named ``The Tim Tebow Act'' after the former University of Florida quarterback who played high school football while being home-schooled.
Alabama Assistant State School Superintendent Craig Pouncey said the bill is unworkable because there is no way to ensure that home-schooled students meet the same academic standards required of public school students to participate in extracurricular activities.
Pouncey said he was also concerned that some adults might bring in students from out-of-state or overseas and place them in substandard schools in the hopes of someday profiting from their athletic ability.
