Montgomery, AL – Country Crossing casino owner Ronnie Gilley is ill, which has taken Alabama's gambling corruption trial in a new direction.
Gilley was supposed to testify for the fifth day Wednesday, but prosecutor Louis Franklin announced Gilley was ill. Later he told the court that Gilley was dehydrated and under doctor's orders to rest for 24 hours.
With Gilley sidelined, prosecutors called as their next witness Bryant Raby, who operates four political action committees
Raby testified that Gilley contributed $200,000 to his PACs in six days before the state Senate passed pro-gambling legislation pushed by Gilley. Raby said he later met with David Mowery, a campaign consultant for indicted state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, and as a result of that meeting he wrote $200,000 in checks to other PACs.
