Alabama Legislative Pay Change Stalls In Debut

Montgomery, AL – Proposed legislation to replace the 61 percent pay raise the Legislature gave itself in 2007 stalled in House and Senate committees during its first appearance Wednesday, but it could come up next week.

The House and Senate Constitutional and Elections committees were scheduled to take their first look at bills by Republican Sen. Bryan Taylor of Prattville and Republican Rep. Mike Ball of Huntsville. Their identical bills would repeal the 2007 raise and tie legislators' salaries to Alabama's median household income.

Taylor delayed his bill for one week when the Senate committee ran short of time for discussion. The House committee postponed Ball's bill until a future meeting because members had questions about how it would work.

The legislation would change the typical legislator's annual compensation from $52,646 to $43,697.
