Alabama parents may soon be able to send their kids to schools outside of their current districts.

On Tuesday the Senate Education Committee voted 7-3 to approve a bill that was advanced by Sen. Del Marsh. It would require public school districts to establish a process to take students outside their districts, and parents would have to pay a tuition equal to local school taxes.

The bill now moves to the Alabama Senate.

Democratic Sen. Vivian Davis Figures of Mobile said the state needs to be putting resources into improving schools.
