State wants 3 years in jail for ousted Alabama sheriff

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakley
Associated Press

A former Alabama sheriff found guilty of theft is currently being held in a jail he used to oversee.

Prosecutors have asked a judge to sentence Mike Blakely to serve time in jail away from where he served as sheriff in Limestone County. The brief from the Alabama Attorney General’s Office also recommended Blakely serve three years in jail, two on probation, and pay $14,000 in restitution fines.

Blakely was convicted earlier this month of theft and using his position for personal gain. He was removed as sheriff of Limestone County after serving in the position for almost four decades.

He is currently being held in Limestone County and will return to court this Friday for his sentencing hearing.
