Birmingham women's rugby looking to expand

Birmingham Steel

A women’s rugby club in Jefferson County is seeking new members this season.

The Birmingham Steel will be accepting new players all season long. The team has practice every Tuesday and Thursday at Krebs field at Ramsay Park, and women interested in playing are invited to attend any practice. The Steel will play matches and tournaments against other southeastern teams year-round.

Stephanie Robinson, the team’s coach, said that any woman over 18 is welcome to try out.

“It’s all shapes, it’s all sizes, it’s all body types, it’s anyone who’s even interested,” Robinson said. “I always say come out, give it a try, and see if you like it. You might be surprised.”

Robinson also said that experience level doesn’t matter.

“I’ve played with women who have been career athletes, they’ve played every sport under the sun since the time they could walk,” she said, “but I’ve also played with women who have never played a sport before in their life, and this their first introduction to athletics, and they come out and they absolutely love it.”

The Birmingham Steel is hosting an event this Sunday for anyone interested in rugby at Krebs Field in Birmingham, from 2-4 p.m. More information can be found at the Birmingham Steel’s Facebook page or at birminghamrugby.com.
