OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama prosecutor has been indicted on felony charges of using his office for personal gain, conspiracy and perjury.
News outlets report Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes surrendered at the county jail Sunday afternoon. He was released on a bond of $31,000.
The state attorney general’s offices says Hughes used his job to benefit his family.
Hughes previously said he had reported a possible ethics violation to the Alabama Ethics Commission, which decided in April to refer the matter to the state. Hughes at the time denied doing anything wrong intentionally.
