Some people see an animal shelter as a sad, dreary place full of unwanted (or undesirable) pets. In fact, a shelter is a haven for pets who find themselves without any home. Prior to September 11,2001, most people knew that dogs had a pretty good sense of smell and could even locate a person lost in the woods – but in general, people had no concept of the contribution that the canine’s abilities could make in such a large scale disaster. And no one ever thought a guide dog could ignore life-threatening circumstances to lead its owner through unimaginable chaos, down almost eighty flights of stairs in near darkness and outside to safety – truly a hero dog!

Most black-and-tan Coonhounds have long silky ears, but as you might guess, some are longer than others. As it turns out, Paige Olsen’s Coonhound, “Lou,” has ears that are so long, Guinness World Records has added her to their new World Records Book for having the longest ears of any living dog!

AHA Rescue - Hurricane Ida
In advance of Hurricane Ida, animal shelters and rescue groups all across the country rushed in to protect vulnerable pets in Louisiana shelters, keeping them safe and giving them a chance for new homes. At the same time, they made room in Louisiana shelters for other pets to find safety after the storm.
