Officials Say Camera Use Was Inappropriate

By Alabama Public Radio

Tuscaloosa, AL – The Department of Public Safety has concluded a state employee inappropriately used a traffic camera to focus on young women near the University of Alabama. The worker has not been publicly identified, and safety officials say they will decide whether to take any disciplinary action against the worker. Department spokesperson Martha Earnhardt says the report is being reviewed. The camera is located on the Strip near campus. The area features several bars and restaurants. The camera usually monitors traffic, but on September 12th someone in a state trooper office diverted the camera to focus on pedestrians. The camera zoomed in on several young women. Earnhardt says the camera can no longer be controlled from the trooper office.
