School Drug Sting Criticized

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – An assistant principal in Birmingham is facing criticism after organizing a drug sting operation at his school using a 14-year-old student.
The student's father says Greg Gober, assistant principal at Pittman Middle School, twice ordered him to buy marijuana in a sting conducted without police knowledge. The second attempt last September revealed the boy's role to the suspect. The student has since withdrawn from school.
Police and school officials learned of the sting after Gober alerted Hueytown officers he had caught a drug dealer. Alabama law requires court approval for a minor to take part in an undercover operation such as Gober's. The assistant principal had none.
No criminal charges will be filed against Gober, but school officials say he could receive a letter of reprimand.
