Lawmakers Wants AG Investigation

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – State Representative Randy Hinshaw has asked Attorney General Troy King for an investigation. Hinshaw says he wants to know if state law was broken when a national anti-tax organization gave 850 thousand dollars to the Alabama Christian Coalition in 2000. The group, Americans for Tax Reform, also gave 300 thousand dollars in 1999 to a group fighting a proposal to create a legal lottery. The group's president, Grover Norquist, has said the money came from a Mississippi Indian tribe that operates a casino. Representative Hinshaw says he believes the donation may violate the state law that says people or groups making a campaign contribution cannot falsely identify themselves. Christian Coalition of Alabama President John Giles says his group is conducting an internal investigation on the matter.
