Moore Sentenced To Death

By Alabama Public Radio

Fayette, AL – Devin Moore was sentenced to death by lethal injection today. Moore showed no emotion today as he was sentenced to death by Circuit Judge James Moore, of no relation. However, he did read a prepared statement to the victims' families that said "I am so sorry. I hope you can find it your hearts to forgive me." Moore was convicted of shooting Fayette police officers James Crump and Arnold Strickland and dispatcher Leslie "Ace" Mealer as he tried to escape the Fayette Police Department after an arrest. His defense attorneys blamed the shootings on Moore's rough upbringing and the video game "Grand Theft Auto", in which players steal cars and shoot police officers. State law calls for an automatic appeal of the death sentence. Moore's attorney says he will challenge the racial makeup of the all-white jury, as well as the judge's decision to exclude evidence about the video game's possible impact.
