Birmingham, AL – The board has decided to pay a search firm to conduct a national search, but didn't name its choice. Superintendent Wayman Shiver's contract expires in May, but board members agreed his successor needs to be hired well in advance of his departure. Shiver says he needs a vacation and will leave the country in June. He says the board should consider hiring someone with experience in an urban system and school finance.
