NRC Checks Up on Nuclear Reactor

By Alabama Public Radio

Athens, AL – The Tennessee Valley Authority continues to prepare one of its nuclear reactors for a 2007 start-up. Unit One at T-V-A's Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant in Athens recently passed an inspection. A Nuclear Regulatory Commission check-up found what it called minor safety violations. They included a paperwork problem in one instance and improper cable splices in another. The T-V-A is spending nearly two billion dollars to restart Unit One, and the job is about 73 percent complete. The T-V-A shut down the reactor in 1985 because of safety concerns. The commission says it will conduct follow-up inspections.
