Montgomery, AL – DPS Director, Colonel Mike Coppage, says troopers will aggressively enforce traffic laws, including setting up checkpoints to catch drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs and enforce seat belt laws. The department estimates that 15 people may die in traffic accidents during the 78-hour Christmas travel period which begins December 23rd and ends at midnight, December 26th. For the New Year's holiday travel period that runs from December 30th through midnight January second -- troopers estimate 16 traffic fatalities on Alabama roadways. This weekend Alabama troopers and state police nationwide will take part in the Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) Lifesaver Weekend.
