Montgomery, AL – The higher raises would go to the state troopers and corporals and the smaller raises would go to the top ranks. State Public Safety Director Mike Coppage says the starting pay for state troopers is nearly 28-thousand dollars, but it is lower than some Alabama police departments and sheriff's departments pay. Coppage says that makes recruitment and retention difficult. The bill, which has been endorsed by the governor, now goes to the House for consideration.
